Jean Marais

Jean Marais (1913-1998), actor and companion of Jean Cocteau, whom he met in 1937, devoted himself to ceramics and sculpture after Cocteau’s death in 1963. Self-taught in ceramics, he perfected his craft in Vallauris, where he settled in 1980 and opened a gallery, creating vases, candlesticks and sculptures inspired by mythology, fairy tales and fantastic creatures.

As a tribute to Cocteau, he also designed an armchair in hammered metal sheets lacquered black and cream, published in 1972, which the gallery has presented.
